Home with curb appeal

Here at Moeller Lawn & Landscape, we receive many curb appeal questions from West Tennessee homeowners and property managers. Quite often, most want to know what they can do to improve or boost their property’s appearance once we’ve landscaped it.

Surprisingly, after we’ve upgraded their yard, it merely comes down to our team providing ongoing maintenance. However, if you have the time and want to do the weekly upkeep yourself, here are six tips that will always boost your home’s curb appeal.

It Begins With Your Topsoil

Though a landscape company transforms your yard, you must always stay alert to your topsoil and its current condition. What many homeowners discover, often too late, is their yard’s dirt changes over time. It might be due to a stormy season, toxic chemicals from pest products, voles, or in many instances, negligence, which alters the topsoil’s original content mixture.

When and How Often To Mow

Ideally, mow once a week and when it’s cool and dry. When you’ve noticed the morning dew has dried, and before the afternoon heat picks up is a perfect time. Depending on your property, you may want to water in the morning. Then cut your lawn late in the afternoon or around dusk before the sun starts to set.

Planting A Hedge Boundary Divider

An overlooked and exceptionally durable curb appeal device is the use of hedges. A hedge can substitute as a property line fence. They are low maintenance, used as tall privacy shields, block the wind, and provide noise buffering. Also, where you have them planted on your property can serve as your plant or flower’s backdrops.

Consider Planting Naturalized Flowers

In West Tennessee, there are four types of plants we recommend because they will multiply and spread. They are Crocuses, Daffodils, Hyacinths, and Grape Hyacinths. When you mass, plant them in large beds or near walkways and doors, it is quite a show when naturalized flowers bloom. Just remember, the rule of thumb is to plant them as deep as three times their height.

Utilize Non-Garden Items For Curb Appeal

Suppose you have a roadside mailbox, lamppost, or flagpole on your property. Don’t let these dull, non-garden items get overlooked. You can transform them by surrounding them with flowers. Using bright Daffodils, Hyacinths, or Crocuses, circling the base with white rock and colorful bark dust beautifies the surrounding area and gets noticed.

Weed Control With Caution

The natural and least invasive way to control weeds is mowing once a week, especially during the spring as your turf comes out of hibernation. We do caution to be careful using pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides. Our main concerns are that these chemicals are harmful to humans and wildlife and can infect our natural drinking water and the air we breathe.
